8 Moving Tips for Young Families

Moving can easily be the bane of anyone’s existence, but, unfortunately, everyone moves sooner or later. It makes no difference whether you move often or only once in your life — it can still drain you. The process is often stressful even for the most skilled of organizers. Here are some great ways to minimize the anxiety of packing that can improve your move.

1. Be ready and prepared

There are some steps you can take before you even pack one box. It is a great idea to call the utility companies as soon as you know you’re moving addresses. You will need to cancel at your current address and schedule for them to start back up at your new home. It is an easy thing to forget on your list, especially when the move starts to get busy, but if you tackle it as soon as you know your new address you will be good to go.

2. Don’t be a hero

There is no need to put yourself through unnecessary stress. You can hire a company to literally do all of the packing, loading, and moving for you. There are some great muscle men and moving companies in Phoenix that will do all the essential heavy lifting for you. If you do plan on hiring professional movers, you will want to know all of their prices by asking for quotes and make sure to read over their customer reviews. It is a good idea to get quotes from at least three different moving companies. The last thing you will want is to end up with sub-par movers who end up breaking all your stuff which in the end could cost you more than if you just went with a reputable company. Go with local movers to avoid the hidden fees that bigger companies sometimes hide. Depending on the type of move, local movers with years of experience can get you the best customer service and turn moving into an excellent experience.

3. Keep the kids occupied

If you have older children that it is important that you know where they are and give them either way they can help you or games to play while they wait for you to sort everything out. Keeping snacks at hand is a good idea too.

4. Get child care

It is not such a bad idea, especially if you have younger children, to opt for child care on the day of the big move. You will be less stressed out if you are not worried that your child is in the way or wondered off while packing the car.

5. Separate and store your belongings

Not everything needs to be moved right away if you are not moving too far down the road. Think about a storage unit, since most allow you to reserve self storage for free. Pack your boxes with only the essentials which would include anything you or your child would use on a daily basis. Make sure you know where their comfort items are as well such as a blanket or special toy. If you are moving into a fixer-upper, the storage unit will also come in handy to store a lot of your furniture. Finding affordable storage can give you a place to store speciality items that you may want to move at a later date. A self-storage unit can also serve as a place to put your belongings if you need to leave one place before your new home is ready for you. Your friendly movers can help put your belongings in a storage unit as well.

6. Stay positive

A smile on your face will make all the difference when it comes time to the big change. Moving can not only upset your children, it can leave them unsettled as well. Children are incredibly sensitive and may need a little more time to get used to the idea.

7. Give them a surprise

As we stated above, it can be a bit scary for a child to think of moving. When they wake up it can be a good idea to have a little present waiting for them to cheer them up. It could be anything from their favourite breakfast to a new colouring book to keep them occupied.

8. Wave goodbye

Make sure on your way out to wave goodbye and get one last picture on the doorstep. Down the line, it will be a nice memory to have. If you take the extra time to part from your old home, your kids will remember moving as an excellent experience and an adventure.
